Who and what is TalkSpot.com? TalkSpot.com was founded in 2001 by Ken Williams. A great way to learn about Ken Williams is to Google him, or he and his wife. Try searching for “Ken and Roberta Williams”, or “Ken Williams Sierra” , or even “Ken Williams Nordhavn”. Ken and his wife started a little computer game company Sierra On-Line, in 1979, that they grew to nearly 1,000 employees before selling it and retiring in 1996. Sierra published the computer games “Kings Quest”, “Leisure-Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards”, “Half-Life”, “Phantasmagoria” and hundreds of others. TalkSpot is Ken’s latest project. It could be argued that TalkSpot is a hobby for Ken, except that the real work is done by TalkSpot’s employees, all of whom have families, homes and mortgages. So, it isn’t a hobby. That said, TalkSpot exists because Ken has always been a technology pioneer and likes the idea of exploring cool, new technology. One of his core beliefs is that anyone can do amazing things with a computer if you give them the right tools. TalkSpot's mission is to give everyone the ability to create their own presence on the web, with a focus on “serious” purposes. Ken likes to say “We do not compete with Facebook or MySpace.” Our target customer wants to do something serious with TalkSpot that is important to them or their business.

How many people are using TalkSpot? As I type this, in March 2009, TalkSpot is just approaching 30,000 websites. Of course, each of those websites has their own website traffic, in some cases many thousands of visitors. TalkSpot is adding hundreds more websites every week.

How good is the customer support? We pride ourselves on our technical support. Technically, we only answer questions during the workday. However, if you will scan our message board (by clicking here) and read through the questions, you’ll notice that many are answered in the middle of the night or on weekends. We are exceptionally proud of what we do, and can’t resist any opportunity to evangelize our product. You’ll notice there are no unanswered questions, we are honest about what we do, and are passionate about our service. Please take the time to compare our customer support to others. We believe we are as good as it gets.

How long has TalkSpot been around? We have been doing this since 2001, with essentially the same team. We are not venture capital backed, have no debt, and are growing even in this tough market. In short: We’ve been here for a long time, and will be here for the foreseeable future.

How reliable is TalkSpot? Ken sent an apology letter in 2005 because we were down for three hours. We had a major server crash, and were horribly embarrassed. We’re confident that it will occur again someday, but have done everything possible to ensure that it will not. Our hosting is provided by www.maximumasp.com. They do high-end hosting for big corporations. Spend some time on their website. They aren’t cheap. TalkSpot’s focus is on mission critical applications. To deliver on that promise we need the right hosting and bandwidth.

Nothing is free. What is the real story?
Talkspot is a free service for almost everyone. Our goal is that a small fraction of users will upgrade to our subscription service. We believe that 95% of everyone that uses TalkSpot will be happy with our free offering, but that 5% will be willing to pay $70 a year for some “premium” features. We do not believe in being pushy, and will not be annoying in trying to up-sell you. We do not like companies that do that. If you like our service, and find that you would like your own domain name (such as www.yourbusinessname.com) and your own email, so that you can be joe@yourbusinessname.com, then feel free to subscribe. We’ll be happy you did, but it’s really your choice.
